Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski Elected as the Chairman of the UN Commission for Social Development

On February 14, by acclamation, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski, was elected Chairman of the Social Development Committee.

The Commission is a UN body with rich traditions, operating since the beginning of the organization’s existence. Its main task is to advise governments around the world on creating policies aimed at supporting the development of society by ensuring appropriate economic, political, cultural and legal conditions.

“Poland attaches great importance to social development and has experiences in this field that are interesting for partners. By leading the Commission’s work, we are ready to enrich its heritage and share our solutions used in Poland.” – said Ambassador Szczerski.

One of the leitmotifs of the Commission’s work during the 63rd session will be strengthening solidarity, which is consistent with Polish priorities in the UN.

“I am glad that the main theme of the Commission’s work will be solidarity. In Poland, we agree that this concept deserves special recognition by the international community and its transformation into practical solutions to the benefit of societies.” – pointed out Ambassador Szczerski in his speech to the members of the Commission.

The Commission meets annually and brings together 46 UN member states. The Commission’s sessions result in resolutions and decisions, including: a resolution on the main topic of a given session and on the social dimension of the New Partnership for African Development.

The Commission plays an advisory role to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), of which Poland has been a member since the beginning of this year, for the next three years. Ambassador Szczerski will take over as Chairman from the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj.
