A new choir for Young Singers! “The Greenpoint Children’s Choir”

The “Greenpoint Children’s Choir” was established in the fall of 2022 on the initiative of the famous New York musician of the younger generation, Nicholas Kaponyas, and the opera singer Kerri Thompson. There has long been a need for this type of children’s choir, in which young people from Greenpoint and the surrounding area would develop musically.

Thanks to the Polish-Slavic Center, the choir found a place to practice and meets for rehearsals once a week in the center. The choir includes not only children from the Greenpoint area. There are those who come from other districts. Parents highly praise the level of classes and encourage others to bring their children to this type of classes.

From the very beginning there is a joyful atmosphere in the choir. New friendships were established not only between the children, but also between their parents, who willingly get involved in the choir’s activities. The children liked this way of spending time and learning about songs that are not promoted in New York schools.

The teacher, Kerri Thompson, makes sure that the classes have an interesting form, and the choir director, Nicholas Kaponyas, deals with logistics and accompaniment during rehearsals and performances.

The choir has performed six times so far: at the Brooklyn City Hall on the occasion of Polish Heritage Month, at an event organized by the Polish Slavic Center on the occasion of lighting the Christmas tree and meeting Santa Claus, during a Christmas carol concert organized by the Polish Slavic Center, at the lighting event organized by Greenpoint councilors, at the anniversary concert of KOBO Music Studio and finally at the Children’s Day event organized by the Polish-Slavic Center.
