The Polish Slavic Center hosted a voter education forum, empowering New Yorkers to make their voices heard in the upcoming elections.
On October 15, a delegation from the Civic Engagement Commission gathered at the Senior Krakus Club to educate attendees about the rights and responsibilities of American voters. With early voting and voter registration deadlines fast approaching, the workshop aimed to ensure that all eligible citizens were properly equipped to participate in the local, state, and federal elections on November 5.
During the informative session, participants learned about the eligibility requirements for voting in the United States, the different types of elections held in the country, and the process of registering to vote. They were also informed that New Yorkers are entitled to three hours of paid leave on election day.
The CEC representatives provided valuable insights into the absentee ballot process, early voting at polling stations, and the availability of translators at select polling stations on election day. Notably, Polish-speaking translators are available at six polling stations in Brooklyn and Queens, and voters were welcome to bring their own translators, including family members or friends.
The event was led by Dr. Sarah Sayeed, Executive Director of the New York City Civic Engagement Commission; Kathleen Daniels, Director of Democracy at CEC; and Dr. Darius Miramey. Following the presentation, the CEC representatives addressed attendees’ questions, assisted with voter registration status checks, and distributed registration forms.
