Girl Vow & John Jay College Events on Missing and Murdered Women – 10/31 & 11/01

Good Afternoon,

On behalf of Girl Vow & John Jay College of Criminal Justice – Department of Sociology, you are cordially invited to our upcoming events on missing and murdered women on October 31st and November 1st, 2024.

On Thursday, October 31st, we will be holding a Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion of “VICE News Presents: When Black Women Go Missing” in collaboration with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. This documentary explores the prevalence of Black women who are missing and murdered and how victims and their families receive little support and are dismissed by law enforcement and the media. It will be held from 11 AM to 2 PM at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Moot Court.

Register for the Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion

On Friday, November 1st, we will hold our Annual Candlelight Vigil to honor the memories and stories of missing and murdered women and girls, and those who have been victims of gender-based violence. The Vigil will begin at 5:45 PM in City Hall Park, near the fountain.

Our Call To Action:

Our Call To Action is to declare visual mannequins as a symbol for missing and murdered women and girls of color. We believe the mannequins are sensitive touchpoints to symbolize the harrowing effects and experiences of missing and murdered women and girls who have been reduced to invisibility.  Join us in endorsing the mannequins by including your name and logo (if applicable) here.

We would be honored to have you join us during these critical events. Our speakers will be Dawn Rowe, PhD, Mary Murphy, Retired Detective Rose Muckenthaler, and Elosandra DeRomano, PhD, and Shadira Smothers.
