“Bridges From the Books”: Workshops for children, exhibition and lecture for teachers and parents – October 15th at 177 Kent Street

The exhibition “Who Are You? The Meaning of Roots”

is based on an exhibition created for the 100th anniversary of Poland’s independence,
which was showcased in several renowned Polish cultural institutions, including the
International Cultural Center in Kraków, the Museum of “Pana Tadeusza” in Wrocław, and
the Gallery of the Palace of Culture and Science in Dąbrowa Górnicza. Now, in a new
bilingual edition, it is being presented to the American and Polish community in New York.
This intergenerational, dialogue-based exhibition project raises questions about what
Poland is, what homeland means, independence, patriotism, life in a free country,
national identity, and heritage. The exhibition addresses national symbols, the Polish
language, history, and culture, as well as regional traditions and outstanding inspiring
Poles such as Nicolaus Copernicus and Marie Curie.
Despite the significance of the topics, the exhibition’s narrative remains light and lively,
opening up opportunities for transmitting and nurturing native traditions in the context of
living outside the borders of one’s homeland. The themes are presented through the
works of distinguished Polish illustrators, accompanied by a printed tour guide with
activities for children.
The exhibition features works by: Agata Dudek, Emilia Dziubak, Joanna Gebal, Nika
Jaworowska-Duchlińska, Przemysław Liput, Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielińscy, Marianna
Oklejak, Ewa Kozyra-Pawlak, Paweł Pawlak, Joanna Rusinek, Tomasz Samojlik,
Marianna Sztyma, Katarzyna Walentynowicz, Elżbieta Wasiuczyńska, and Józef Wilkoń.
