Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski appointed vice-chairman of UN ECOSOC

At the UN headquarters in New York, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected a new presidium, which will hold its functions for one year, until July 2025. The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the UN, Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski, was appointed vice-president of the Council.
Entrusting a position in the ECOSOC Presidium is an expression of recognition for Poland’s role and ambitions in the UN development policy. The issue of sustainable development is the second most important area of UN activity in New York, next to peace and security. It is very important that as Poland we have the opportunity to influence the UN development agenda. And we will shape it in accordance with the motto of our membership in ECOSOC: “Solidarity development”, which can become a Polish brand in this policy. – said Ambassador Szczerski.
Canadian Ambassador Robert Rae is the new chairman of ECOSOC. In addition, the presidium will include representatives of Nepal, Costa Rica and the African group, who, together with the Polish ambassador, represent all UN regional groups.
ECOSOC is the most important UN body coordinating activities for sustainable development. The Council consists of 54 members elected for a 3-year term. Each year, the General Assembly renews a third part of the Council’s composition – Poland was elected last year for the years 2024-2026. The Bureau manages the work of ECOSOC and represents it in relations with states and other UN bodies.
Polish priorities in ECOSOC are building the resilience of societies to crises, reducing inequalities and strengthening global food security.
